It was discovered this week that one family who made their reservations were not included on the list and I wouldn't have known of the discrepancy if the family had not informed me that their reservations had been made. This leaves me a bit concerned that other families have reserved rooms that are not showing up on our group list which means they are probably not getting the group rate either. Therefore, I'm asking families to either leave a post on the Facebook TAFRU events page or email me - debweeks@mchsi.com when hotel reservations have been made. I don't need a lot of detail, just a quick note telling me you made reservations and how many rooms you reserved. Also, if any family reserves a suite at the Marriott Suites, please let me know that as well.

As I'm sure all of you know, putting together an event like this costs money. The planning committee is trying to keep costs as low as possible. After all, we don't want our own families to have to spend more than is absolutely necessary. Once we have finalized all the plans for the reunion, we will make registration forms available. We do know that the fees will include the cost for the Meet-n-Greet Friday night, which will include dinner; dinner Saturday night; lunch Sunday; and any group outing on Saturday. We hope to have all the plans finalized, fees tallied and registration forms available within the next 6 weeks and will post the information here when available.

If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to leave a comment here, post something on the Toukoul Families FB page or email me.

A Couple Pieces of Info

To make reservations at the Marriott, you can also click on this link - Marriott Cancellations do not need to be made by June 23rd. You have until 6:00 p.m. the day of your arrival to cancel without penalty.

Hotel is Ready for Reservations

We finally have everything at the hotel set up and ready for reservations. Here are the details.

Chicago Marriott O'Hare
8535 West Higgins Road
Chicago, IL
http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/chiap-chicago-marriott-ohare/

We currently have a block of 15 rooms set up for TAFRU. The rate is $89 per night and $12 per night parking fees.

Reservations should be made directly with Marriott reservations by calling:

1-800-228-9290 or 773-693-4444

When making your reservation, tell the you are part of the TAFRU group.

Reservations must be guaranteed with a major credit card, but no charges to the card will be made until your stay. You will have until 5:00 p.m., June 23, 2011 to make your reservation and any cancellations must also be completed by 5:00 p.m., June 23, 2011. There will be no charges for cancellations.

Any rooms remaining in the block will be released for general sale at the regular room rate. We are encouraging families who plan to attend TAFRU to make their reservations as soon as possible. Not only will you be assured room availability, but it will also assist us in determining if additional rooms need to be added to the block.

The rooms are being made available for the evenings of July 15 and 16. However, any family who wishes to extended their stay in Chicago can reserve their room for 3 days prior or 3 days after the event for the negotiated rate of $89 per night and $12 per night parking fee. The additional nights are based upon availability, so we again encourage you to make your reservations in advance if you plan to extend your stay.

For those families requiring or wanting more space, you can contact the following hotel:

Chicago Marriott Suites O'Hare
6155 North River Road
Rosemont, Illinois
1-800-228-9290

Unfortunately, due to the booking requirements of the Marriott Suites, we were unable to obtain a group rate. If, however, we have at least 10 families confirm their stay at the Marriott Suites, we can approach the hotel and request a lower group rate. Therefore, if you do book a room at the Marriott Suites, please let one of the planning committee members know so we can keep an eye on the number of reservations made. We again ask that you make your reservations as soon as possible as this is strictly based on availability.

Also, there is free shuttle service between the Chicago Marriott O'Hare and the Chicago Marriott Suites O'Hare, so transportation between the two hotels will not be a problem.

For those traveling to TAFRU by air, the Marriott will provide free shuttle service from and to O'Hare International Airport.

Another note about the hotel location - There is an El station just across the parking lot from the Chicago Marriott O'Hare. It is about a 30 minute ride into downtown Chicago and tickets can be purchased at the station. So for those wanting to extend their stay in Chicago to take in the sights, you will not need a vehicle and we would recommend that you take advantage of the wonderful public transportation system in Chicago during your stay.

If anyone has any questions, please leave a comment and one of the committee members will respond asap.

We are working on some exciting things for TAFRU this year and hope to meet many of you this summer.

Chicago Marriott O'Hare

I know I haven't been passing along a lot of information to the group lately, but wanted to let you know that although it's been quiet, there is work being done behind-the-scenes. Fortunately, we are making progress and starting to put some things in place so I wanted to give you a little update on what's happening.

I have been working with the Chicago Marriott O'Hare since October and am happy to say they have given us a pretty good rate of $89 per night. For those who live or have stayed in Chicago, you know that parking can be pretty expensive as well. For a matter-of-fact, I know of no hotel in the Chicago area that doesn't charge parking fees which can really add up. The Marriott is no different, however, they have agreed to reduce their self-park fees from $24 per night to $12 per night for our group. Again, a pretty good rate.

Also, the Marriott will be offering this rate to TAFRU families for up to 3 days prior and 3 day after TAFRU for any family who would like to extend their stay in Chicago.

Another nice feature of this hotel is location.

For those flying into O'Hare to attend TAFRU, the hotel offers complimentary shuttle service from and back to the airport.

For larger families who plan to attend TAFRU but need more room, there is a Chicago Marriott Suites O'Hare about 2 miles down the road. Complimentary shuttle service is offered between to the two hotels. Unfortunately, the Marriott Suites has a requirement that we were unable to fulfill at this time. However, if there are families that would like to book a room at the Marriott Suites, please let me know as soon as possible by leaving a comment here or contacting me via Facebook. If there are enough families who want/need the additional space provided at Marriott Suites, I will go back to the sales team and try to get it set up.

Chicago offers a great public transportation system, however, hotels out by the airport don't always have easy access to the system. The Marriott is an exception as one of the El stations is about a 3 minute walk across the parking lot. It is a wheelchair accessible station, which also means those who have children in strollers can easily access the El. Score!

A sales agreement is being sent to me and once the Marriott receives the signed agreement their events team will get our group finalized and we can begin making reservations. I will post the details here once received. In the meantime, if you want to check out information on the hotel, you can click on the photo in the right had column of the blog page.

Also, if you are a member of the Toukoul Adoptive Families Facebook page, please go to the events page and take a minute to let us know if you will be attending, may be attending or won't be attending TAFRU. This information is so very helpful to the planning committee as we make decisions regarding TAFRU.

If you are not a member of the Toukoul Adoptive Families Facebook page, please feel free to leave a comment here.

As always, please stay tuned for more information. Thanks.

TAFRU Update

Just a quick update regarding plans for TAFRU 2011 - Chicago.

First of all, I want to thank Meg DeZutti and Jeanne Okrasinski for volunteering their assistance in helping plan TAFRU 2011. The three of us have been tossing around some ideas for TAFRU and as plans are confirmed I will be sharing them here.

Right now our priority is finding a hotel to accommodate our group. I started contacting hotels back in September and quickly discovered two things.

1. Hotels in Chicago book quickly.
2. Hotels in downtown Chicago are pricey.

Okay, I knew that downtown Chicago hotels were pricey, but I was hoping I could find us an awesome group rate. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened, so it was on to Plan B which appears to be working out much better as we have found a hotel out by O'Hare that can not only accommodate our group, but can do so for a good rate. It is also a much better location for any family that happens to be flying in for the event as they provide shuttle service from the airport to the hotel and back. Downtown Chicago hotels don't provide that service, so this is a huge bonus in my book.

As soon as we have the hotel confirmed, information will be posted and a link to the hotel provided so families can make their reservations.

In the meantime, I want to wish everyone a safe and wonderful holiday season.

What To See and Do in Chicago - #8

Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Co.

I'll admit, this is something I've yet to do on my visits to Chicago, but have wanted to do for a very long time. Hopping on one of the Trolley's or Double Decker buses seems like a great way to see the city.

You can choose from a variety of tours:

- The Signature Tour covers 13 miles of Chicago's downtown and loop area. It is a single day ticket that allows you to ride for the full two hours or hop off to do some sightseeing on your own and re-board later than same day to continue the tour.
- Maybe you would rather see a smaller section of the city. The North Neighborhood tour will take you to places like Millennium Park or Wrigley Field. Or maybe you would be more interested in seeing Chinatown or stopping by Oprah's Store on the West Neighborhood tour. Of course there is also the Museum of Science and Industry on the South Neighborhood tour.
- If you're going to be in Chicago for a few days and want to take your time seeing all the sites, the Explore Chicago tour is probably what you need. You can jump on the bus or trolley and take a ride to one of the museums, stop for some shopping or a nice lunch with friends or family. You have 3 full days explore Chicago while sitting back and enjoying the scenic view of Chicago from one of the Trolley's or Double Decker buses.

For more information about the tours, visit the Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Co. website here. First it was our family fun trip to California and then our family fun trip to Chicago. Actually, the trip to Chicago was also about planning TAFRU, but I always love the opportunity to head into the city. Still, my time away meant time away from a lot of things, including posting here.

Now onto more things to do in Chicago.

Chicago History Museum

I realize that not everyone is interested in history and even more are probably not interested in Chicago's history, but for you history buffs out there, this one may be worth the trip.

The museum takes care of, shows and interrupts over 22 million authentic pieces of Chicago and U.S. history in both permanent and temporary exhibits.

Permanent exhibits include - Chicago: And not just any baseball, but Chicago baseball.

Chicago Cubs

They started out in 1876 as the Chicago White Stockings and in 1902 the Chicago Daily News began referring to the team full of young players as the Cubs. In 1907 they won their first World Series and were the first team to win back to back World Series titles when they won again in 1908. While the Chicago Cubs have been in other World Series games, the title of World Series champion has eluded them since that time. However, that doesn't stop die-hard fans from flocking the stadium each and every year to watch the Cubbies and hope that next year will be the year!

The Chicago Cubs do have some magnificent history - Great players like Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, and Ron Santos; one of the most popular baseball parks ever, Wrigley Field; and announcers such as Harry Caray and Jack Brickhouse.

Chicago White Sox

This team was also formally known as the Chicago White Stockings. That's correct, White Stockings was the original name of two professional baseball teams in Chicago. The White Stockings American League team eventually shortened their name to White Sox.

In 1906, the White Sox captured the American League crown as well as the World Series crown when they beat who else - the Cubs. Chicago baseball was the sport to watch from 1906 - 1908. However, the Sox didn't win another division championship until 1959 and waited another 26 before taking the title again. World Series champions also eluded the Sox, but they were finally able to claim that title when they beat the Houston Astros in the 2005 World Series.

The history of the White Sox has had its ups and downs and I'm not just talking wins and losses. They have had players like Joe Jackson, Frank Thomas and Red Faber, but they have also had some turmoil, such as the charges filed against 8 members of the White Sox for fixing the World Series game in exchange for cash.

The White Sox play at U.S. Cellular field, which was formally known as Comiskey Park.

With two baseball teams that have been around since the late 1800's, there is certainly a lot more that could be written here. However, I'll let you click on the links and read about one or both of these beloved Chicago teams at your leisure. And if the opportunity arises, take a trip out to the ball park, have some peanuts, a hot dog, iced cold soda or beer and enjoy some Chicago baseball.

Mark Your Calendars

Thanks to everyone who participated in choosing a date for TAFRU 2011-Chicago.

The winning date, with 42% of the votes, is July 15-17, 2011.

I hope you'll mark your calendar and plan some vacation time to attend TAFRU in Chicago next summer. This will be a bit challenging, but hopefully fun and informative for everyone.

So, without further ado, here is my first entry.

Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum

The planetarium opened it's door in 1930 and was the first planetarium in the western hemisphere. Adler Planetarium has over 35,000 sq. feet of exhibits with three full-size planetarium theaters. It's located on Lake Shore Drive at the Museum Campus and I can tell you from experience that it is truly a 'Family Fun Things to Do' in the Windy City. For more information, visit their website here.

A TAFRU Suggestion

One suggestion I was given after TAFRU - Portland, is that I spend some time sharing information about the city in which TAFRU will be taking place. The thought is that families who plan to travel from outside the area, may want to extend their visit either before or after TAFRU and the information provided could assist them in planning their family vacation. I think this is an excellent idea and I will be doing my best to provide information on Chicago and some of things that families may want to see or do while in the city. My biggest problem with this idea, however, is where to begin. There is just so much to see and do in Chicago. Regardless, starting next week I will be doing a weekly post on Family Fun Things to do in Chicago and will hopefully find plenty of things that your families would enjoy seeing and doing in the Windy City.

Spreading the Word

While I believe word of TAFRU is spreading, I'm always looking for new ways to get the word out to other Toukoul adoptive families. One suggestion that was given to me is to have other Toukoul families post the link to the blog on their personal blog. If each blogger would post the link, it would be an awesome way to get the word out to families who may not have heard of TAFRU. If you have a blog, would you please post the link on your blog to help spread the word?

Thanks.

TAFRU 2010 Portland

Our first ever TAFRU was, in my opinion, a success. TAFRU is in place as a way to bring families together, who have adopted from Toukoul and to offer our children the opportunity to make connections and build friendships with other children from Toukoul. Families came together and children connected. That is why I consider TAFRU 2010 - Portland a success.

There are some pictures posted on the Toukoul Adoptive Families Facebook page for anyone who is interested in viewing them.

For those who attended the reunion, I would like your feedback. Everyone was given a short survey to complete. You can either complete the survey and mail it back to me or send me a quick email with your thoughts and suggestions. I really do value your input and it will help as I work on plans for TAFRU 2011 - Chicago.

And speaking of TAFRU 2011 - Chicago, I will be setting up some polls asking for everyone's input. The first poll will be selecting a date for TAFRU Chicago. I did get some feedback from a few people who were unable to attend TAFRU Portland because of conflicts around Ethiopian Heritage and Culture camps. It appears that many of these camps takes place around the end of July and/or beginning of August. While I know there is no way to find a date that works for everyone, I would like to find a date that works with the majority.

Also, I'm looking for some volunteers to help me in planning TAFRU 2011 - Chicago. Please leave a comment or shoot me an email if you are interested.

Lastly, I have changed the blog from private to public. This was a suggestion I received from a few people as well. Some were not able to access the blog and I also hope that making it public will allow more families to follow the blog closely for information and to provide input.

Feel free to leave me comments as TAFRU Chicago is planned.

One Week From Today - TAFRU Portland

After much planning and anticipation, TAFRU Portland is almost here.

We have 12 families registered to attend and while most are from Oregon, there are 4 families traveling from out-of-state. I'm sure this has to do with the economy, the fact that the Oregon and Washington Toukoul families are already connected at various times throughout the year, and distance for those living further east and south of Oregon. Our family is traveling from Illinois and I must admit that there is some disappointment that our family won't be meeting more Toukoul families this year in Portland, but I'm excited beyond words that we are going to meet those attending this year.

Even with the lower than expected registrations, I have already begun some planning for TAFRU again next year. However, it will not be held in Portland, but instead we will be moving to the Chicago area. My hope is that moving closer to the Central and Eastern part of the U.S. will allow Toukoul families from those areas an opportunity to attend.

If there are still families that would like to attend TAFRU Portland this year, it's not too late to register. We just need to have all registrations by July 24th.

And for those families who could not travel for TAFRU Portland, I hope we meet next year at TAFRU Chicago.

Some Reminders

You have until July 23rd to make your hotel reservations for TAFRU. We had full intentions of having it out a couple weeks ago, but for various reasons we were unable to do so. Better late than never though!

Although you'll see this information on the registration form, I wanted to highlight and give some explanation on a few items.

As I'm sure all of you understand, putting on an event such as this costs money. The TAFRU committee has spent countless hours trying to create a reunion that will be fun for everyone and provide some education applicable to families with children from Ethiopia while keeping the cost as low as possible. With that said, I want to make sure everyone knows what is included in the registration fees.

- Appetizers, desserts and drinks at the Friday night Meet-n-Greet
- Entrance to the zoo Saturday
- Hair care workshop
- Dinner Saturday night
- Food and drinks at the farewell lunch Sunday afternoon

Any money that is left after paying all the reunion expenses will be donated to Ethiopian Orphan Relief.

We are offering the sale of TAFRU t-shirts. This is an optional purchase and anyone who buys a t-shirt is asked to wear it to our Saturday events. The t-shirts are blue, similar to the gates at Toukoul. We apologize for not offering t-shirts in infant and toddler sizes. In order to provide smaller size t-shirts, the printer would need to create another screen print in a smaller size and because the t-shirts would have been a separate order, they ended up costing more than the children and adult size t-shirts. We just didn't feel it would be cost effective at this time, but hope to have them available for future reunions. We hope everyone understands.

We are also creating an on-line TAFRU directory. If you are not planning to attend the reunion but would like your information added to the directory, please complete the appropriate areas on the registration form and send it in. The directory will only be sent to those who have requested their information be included.

The registration form needs to be printed, completed and mailed no later than July 12th. There is a late fee of $25 for any registration post marked after July 12th and we will also not be able to accept any t-shirt orders post marked after that date.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we will address those questions here on the blog.

Thanks.

Click on Registration Form to print, complete and send in your registration for TAFRU 2010.

Happy Mother's Day

To all the mom's and future mom's out there! Sorry for the absence. However, there is a good reason. Just 5 days after the last post, I boarded a plane for Ethiopia where my husband and I were united with the most beautiful baby girl on the face of the earth. Yes, I am now mommy to an Ethiopian princess we have named Naomi. It was an amazing trip and we have been home just shy of 1 month and she is doing great!

So, that's my excuse. I am back though and the planning committee is hard at work. The registration form is being created as I write this and we will hopefully have the form and agenda posted here within the next week.

We have some good things planned and hope that everyone is happy and excited about attending TAFRU this August.

Hair and Skin Care Workshop

Have you seen the Happy Girl Hair website?

The planning committee is very excited to announce that the one and only 'Joyful Mom' from the Happy Girl Hair website will be conducting a skin and hair care workshop during the reunion.

If you plan to attend the reunion, then make sure you attend this workshop and bring your skin and hair care questions with you.

Need a Little Assistance

For those in the Portland area, the planning committee is requesting your assistance.

We are trying to plan an Ethiopian dinner for Saturday night and have been in contact with some of the Ethiopian restaurants in the Portland area. The problem we're having is finding a restaurant that can accommodate more than about 80 people. Based on the responses we've received regarding attendance, we anticipate having over 80 in attendance. All the restaurants have offered to cater a dinner for us, but we need to find a location that would accommodate a group of our size.

If anyone knows of a church or community center in the Portland area that may work for our group, please leave us a comment.

Thank you!

Reunion Plans

Although we haven't yet decided on exact locations for everything and don't have a completed agenda yet, I thought I'd share what we have planned for TAFRU.

Friday evening we will have a Meet-n-Greet. This will include food and drink for everyone in attendance.

Saturday morning - Breakfast with the agency representatives

Saturday morning/afternoon - Trip to the Oregon Zoo

Saturday evening - Ethiopian dinner

Sunday noon - Farewell lunch at a local park

We are also working on a hair and skin care class and/or Ethiopian cooking class for Saturday afternoon.

Our goal is to provide everyone ample opportunity to spend time with each other in fun and informal settings and to also provide some educational opportunities as well.

Also, we are looking into making t-shirts available for those participating in TAFRU this year. If we are able to come up with a TAFRU logo and can get a good price on t-shirts, we will provide the information at registration and ask that they be worn during the zoo trip on Saturday. Purchase will, however, be optional.

Updates and Info

I allowed the blog polls to go ahead and close, however, we are still collecting attendance information. One thing that has been discussed is putting together an agency breakfast for Saturday morning. Some families will be traveling from outside the Portland area and have not had the opportunity to meet their agency representative and this would allow those families that opportunity.

Before we try to set anything up, we want to get a better idea of how many would truly be interested.

Also, we would like to get a better idea of how many are planning on attending TAFRU at this point. Yes, folks you read that correctly, $58.00 per night. This rate is for 1 or 2 adults per room. There is no additional charge for children under 18 years of age. The rate does go up to $68 per night for 3 adults in a room and $78 per night for 4 adults in a room, but still good rates.

In addition, the hotel is in a good location for our reunion. Not only is it in close proximity to events we are planning for the reunion, but it is located along the MAX line, so anyone flying into Portland for TAFRU can catch the Max and will be dropped off directly across the street from the hotel.

We have 20 rooms set aside for reservations at this time and can reserve more if necessary. Reservations will be accepted until Friday, July 23, 2010. In addition, if you make a reservation that needs to be cancelled, you also have until Friday, July 23, 2010 to do so. We obviously hope that no one will need to cancel their plans to attend TAFRU, but we do need to make sure everyone understands that any room reservation cancelled after that date will still incur the charges for that room. This is one of the requirements to get such a great room rate.
What we are asking families to do now is start reserving their rooms. If you plan on attending TAFRU or think you might attend TAFRU, please go ahead and reserve your room now.

Remember, even if you later discover you can't attend, you can cancel your reservation without charge. Just make sure it's done by the July 23, 2010 cut-off date. By making your reservation now, you'll be guaranteed a room and it will also give us a better idea on the actual number of rooms needed for the reunion. I know August seems like a long ways off, but we were shocked to discover that some of the hotels we contacted were already booked August 6-8, 2010. We just want to make sure we can get all the rooms we need and the closer it gets to reunion time, the more we risk not being able to get rooms if we need them. So please book early.

You can make your reservation by phone at (503)281-6111 and tell them you are with TAFRU, group code 605. You can also make reservations by visiting their website and when you get to the reservation details screen, enter 605 in the group/convention code box. You will need to secure your reservation with a credit card, but no charges will be assessed until check-out.

The TAFRU planning committee is working on the remaining plans for our reunion and doing our best to make this as fun, memorable, and successful as possible, so stay tuned for more information.

Toukoul Adoptive Families on Facebook

I don't know how many of you have joined the Toukoul Adoptive Families Facebook page, but one of our Toukoul families received some bad news about their little guy. Two committee members recently brought their children home from Ethiopia and needless-to-say they are happily busy with other things right now. Unfortunately, my oldest son has been in the hospital for the last 3 weeks so even though plans have been discussed, it's been slow going for the last several weeks.

Since the other committee members will one day be getting their referrals, traveling, bringing children home, we thought it would make sense to ask for a couple more committee volunteers to help with the planning.

The role on the committee would primarily be to provide input and feedback as we try to nail down all the details of the reunion.

If you would like to participate in the reunion planning, please email me - debweeks@mchsi.com. What we've discovered is that we need some more input from you before we make a decision. In order to have the reunion run smoothly we would ideally like to have the activities and hotel in the same area of town. So, what would you like to do at the reunion? I am posting some polls to help narrow down our choices and will leave them up for about a week. Also, if you know of a location you think would make a great meeting place or an activity you would love to do leave us a comment! With your help we should have the location nailed down in the next couple weeks.

Here Come the Referrals

I don't have any TAFRU information to post yet (hopefully soon), but we have some really happy families today.

Click here to congratulate the Theis family.

Click here to congratulate Shannon & Matt.

I hope this is just the beginning of the referral flood!!

Welcome Home!

I know of a couple families who have very recently returned home with their children.

Becky and Naing brought home Haven and Alec within the last few days.

Eric and Debra should be home now with their son Joseph or at least should be home very soon.

Referrals seem to be non-existent at the moment. You can either leave a comment here or go to the Toukoul Adoptive Families Facebook page and post your news.

I know a couple of our Toukoul families have court dates coming up soon, some families recently passed court and now have their Embassy dates, but I haven't heard any referral news lately.

Has anyone gotten a referral over the last couple of weeks?

For those waiting on a referral, how long have you been waiting now?

Are you waiting for an infant, older child, sibling group, boy or girl?

For those who recently traveled, do you have suggestions for those of us who will be one day travel on our pick up trips?

If you haven't introduced yourself, please do so.

Do you have a blog that you would like us to include on the side bar?

Let's have some fun and get to know each other via cyber space until the day we can meet in person. This weekend we've been discussing whether it makes more sense to make the reunion an all-inclusive type of weekend or a pay-as-you-go type of weekend. When we refer to all-inclusive we are referring to the costs involved for food and activities at those times the 'entire' group is together during the weekend. We would collect the money ahead of time and then take care of paying the food and activity bills for the entire group. Anyone needing accommodations will be paying for those separately.

If you are planning on attending TAFRU or even if you're just considering attending TAFRU at this point, we are asking you to participate in the poll on the right hand side of the blog page. Knowing what the majority of the group would like really does help us with our plans.

Our goal is to make the weekend as low-budget as possible while making sure it is fun, entertaining, and family oriented.

If anyone has any questions or ideas, please leave a comment for the planning committee.

Thanks.

May Be Kind of Slow

Because plans for TAFRU are going to take some time, there isn't going to be a lot of news posted on the blog. Right now we're checking out Portland area hotels for accommodations and hope to have something in place in September so travelers can start making their reservations. In the meantime, I don't want the blog to become a ghost town, so I thought it would be fun to share some Toukoul family news along the way.

I don't believe anything is posted on their blog yet, but Becky & Naing received some good news today, so watch their blog for details. Unless of course Becky would like to share something here :-)

The Peebles survived the news that the MOWA would be closed during their court date and were given the good news recently that their case will be heard on July 30th. Yeah!!!

Matt & Emily are now in ET picking up their precious baby girl.

The DeZutti's are also in ET picking up their handsome little guy.

I'm sure both these families will be blogging about their ET adventures and sharing lots of pictures when they return.

Mike & Laura returned home with adorable little Emme and Mona recently returned home with her cutie patootie Janissa.

If anyone else has news they would like to share, please post a comment here. Good news is always welcome!

There is still plenty of room to add blog links to this blog, so if you have a blog that you would like to share with us, please leave a comment with the information and we'll get it added.

If you didn't get an invite or see the information here, we now have a Toukoul Adoptive Families Facebook page. The link is on the right hand side of the blog page and so far 60 people have joined the FB page. We hope others will join and I want to encourage everyone to participate on FB. It's a great way for us to get to know each other and I know there are some who joined in hopes of getting information from those who have gone before, so please check out the discussion groups and share information about yourself on the wall.

21 Families

We have 26 families that participated in our recent attendance poll. My hope is that over the next several months even more families will express their interest in attending.

In the meantime, we will begin looking at accommodations and activities during the reunion. I know that it's almost impossible to predict what your plans might be a year from now and we are not asking for any commitment at all. We just need to know if there is any possibility that your family may be attending TAFRU next year and if you'll need accommodations while in Portland. If you know that the chances are slim to none that you'll be able to attend, then vote that way. If you think there is a slight chance that you'll be in attendance, please let us know. The last thing we want to do is start making plans for 20 families and then find out later that we're going to have 50 families attending and not be able to accommodate everyone. It really would be much easier to make arrangements for more and then cut back those numbers if we have to.

So, if you haven't cast your vote, please do so today. Voting ends tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!!!!

*Update*

Because this information is so important in planning TAFRU, I've extended the poll until Friday afternoon. If you haven't participated in the poll, please do so. It will only take a couple seconds. Thanks.

Time is running out

Hi everyone. There was a tie between the August 6th - 8th and August 13th - 15th dates. To select a specific date, I've set up a poll which is on the sidebar of the blog page. The poll will be open for 2 weeks, so please take a second to vote.

I'm also putting out a request for 3 or 4 volunteers to help with the remaining plans for TAFRU. I'll need at least one volunteer, preferably two from Oregon. If you are interested in helping out, please let me know.

I also realize that finding a location and date that would allow all families to attend was an impossible task. However, it was nice to see that some who chose Oregon, are not from Oregon but are interested in traveling to attend TAFRU. My hope that by having 14 months to plan, other families living outside the Oregon area will also be able to attend.

In the meantime, please continue to read the blog for updates as more specific details become available. I think we all want TAFRU to be a success so it can continue in the years to come at a location near you.

Oops!

I just realized that I left out a possible weekend, July 30th - August 1st. I know I've enjoyed reading the blogs and feel like I'm getting to know everyone a little better.

I hope everyone has a safe and glorious Memorial Day weekend!!!!!

Keeping Up On the Updates

In an effort to do a better job of keeping everyone updated, here are the latest and greatest stats:

We now have 43 reunion blog participants and 10 people who have requested, but not yet accepted invites to the blog.

Oregon is still in the lead for location, however, the Central U.S. has now taken over the 2nd place position.

June 25-27, August 6-8 and August 13-15 are all tied for the reunion date.

Again, if you have not yet left a comment with your choice for location and/or date, please do so. I've gotten responses from 20 different families so far asking to be added to the blog list and several of you are passing the word onto other families. Please continue to pass the word to any Toukoul families you know.

Because we have several on the blog now and I'm sure more to come, I thought we should at least start making a couple important decisions. Date and location.

I think we will all agree that finding a date and location that is going to work for everyone is just not feasible. However, I know we can find a date and location that will be agreeable to the majority. My hope is that by having this reunion in the summer of 2010, it will allow those families that want to attend, but will have to travel to do so, the time to plan and save.

What I would like start with now is discussing dates and location. I'm going to give us a list of dates to choose from and would like everyone to let me know which dates work for you. These are all 2010 dates.

June 25 - 27
July 9 - 11
July 16-18
July 23-25
Aug 6-8
Aug 13-15

I'm avoiding 4th of July weekend due to travel costs typically being higher over holidays. I've also tried to select dates that won't conflict with kid's school schedules.

Next, I would like us to discuss location. Tell me where you would like to see the reunion held and why you think it would be a good location.

Thanks for your participation in helping make this reunion become a reality.

Welcome

Welcome to the 'planning place' for the first annual Toukoul Adoptive Families Reunion (TAFRU).

The decision to plan TAFRU is very recent. I am a future Toukoul adoptive parent and I expressed my interest and desire in keeping my future child connected with not just other children from Ethiopia, but children who were also adopted from Toukoul. I discovered that other parents had been in discussion about this as well and the idea of TAFRU was born.

There are a lot of plans yet to be made, but as this event is put together, it will be posted here. At this point all that has been decided is that TAFRU will be held sometime in the summer of 2010. We would like to involve everyone in deciding the date and location, so watch for polls to be posted in the near future.

I look forward to getting to know many of you via this blog and hopefully meeting many of you in the future.
